Accelerator is a brutal, high in tension, demanding of focus, and quite fun don’t-hit-the-walls game.

The Indie FPS

, , , , on May 22, 2011

Robert Yang made a post on his blog highlighting the “indie FPS genre” with examples. The loose theme is first person exploration sans shooting with blocky graphics. All of his examples are good, although a few aren’t yet playable. There are a lot of comments mentioning other games which may or may not be in the genre, some of which are very cool, although there are many to sift through.

I’m not done playing everything, but my current recommendations from the comments are Which,¬†Tabor Robak’s art games (the image is from BNPJ), The Void, and Hazard: The Journey of Life (demo).

FRACT is an atmospheric adventure game set in an abstract forgotten world of analog sounds, samples and glitches.
Myst + Rez with a heavy dose of Tron.

This game is really good! Download here.

Activate the Three Artefacts and then Leave | increpare games
How long can you play this before going insane? The game is essentially a 3D labyrinth.
I managed to find all three artefacts but I couldn’t get out after some time, and stopped. The game is a bit wonky in that sometimes it is hard to extract the zip, sometimes it is hard to get running, and sometimes the graphical settings need to be changed to get it to work properly.¬†Nonetheless, I enjoyed it.
